How does the body recognize toxins, how does it respond to them, and how does it dispose of them?

Toxins are noxious substances that are produced inside the body during metabolic processes, consumed or inhaled by the nose every day.

The human body is equipped with integrated mechanisms such as the liver and kidneys to get rid of these toxins. If the body does not successfully remove these toxins, they can accumulate over time and turn into toxic substances. Besides, toxic overload can damage tissues, affect organ performance and thus lead to a wide range of health problems.

Types of toxins

Toxins are chemicals that are produced both organically and industrially.

  • Natural toxins are generally found in food coming from plants and animals.
  •  synthetic toxins are found in industrial gases, drugs, environmental pollutants, and chemical pesticides, which may enter the body directly or via contaminated food chains.
  • metabolic toxins are by-products of a variety of metabolic activities within the body.

Toxins are produced inside the body or if they penetrate through inhalation, ingestion, injection, or through the skin and eyes.

Diseases like chronic kidney disease and liver disease can cause the accumulation of toxins, and the unregulated use of some medications can also lead to toxicity. The consumption of illegal drugs is also an agent of blood poisoning.


The symptoms of intoxication can vary considerably depending on the type, length, amount, and age of the person concerned. Although the most common poisonous exposures are personal and occur at home, other incidents include occupational and environmental exposures.

Although the signs and symptoms of poisoning may vary depending on the type of poisoning and other factors, there are some common symptoms to consider, such as

1-Vomiting and nausea

Nausea and vomiting are not diseases, but they are symptoms of many conditions, like :

Botulism is a rare but serious disease due to toxins produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. When these bacteria get into an injury, they multiply and produce toxins. This type of food poisoning is most frequent among people who inject heroin and black tar.

*Infant Botulism

The most common type of food poisoning starts with the development of bacterial spores of Clostridium botulinum in a child’s intestine. Children get food-poisoned after exposure to germs that cause bacteria to multiply in the intestine and produce toxins.

It usually occurs in infants 2 months to 8 months old.

The source of infantile botulism can be honey or exposure to soil contaminated by bacteria.

Poisoning by eating food with bacteria, germs, viruses or parasites is more common than you think. An estimated 48 million Americans, or one in six, are poisoned annually.

You may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea a few hours after eating contaminated food. But sometimes it may take days or even more than a week for symptoms to occur.

Common causes

  • Norovirus, often referred to as stomach flu, is behind more than half of all food-borne illnesses in the US. Norovirus can infect you not just by eating contaminated food, but also by touching door handles and other surfaces or coming into contact with an infected person.
  • Salmonella is the name of a group of bacteria that grow in eggs, undercooked meats, unpasteurized milk, cheese, or fruits, and vegetables.
  • Listeria is an unusual bacterium that can grow at cold temperatures such as refrigeration. It is present in smoked fish, raw cheeses, ice cream, sausages, and so on.

2-Difficulty Swallowing

Trouble swallowing, or dysphagia, is an inability to swallow food or fluids easily. People who are struggling to swallow can choke on food or fluids when trying to swallow. This symptom is not always an indication of a medical problem but may be due to intoxication. Snakebites, for instance, may cause an allergic reaction or infection.

Difficulty swallowing may also be the result of the Excessive use of the medicine, whether intentionally or by mistake.

Take more than one type of medicine at one time.

Or by Neurotoxicity which refers to damage to the brain or peripheral nervous system caused by exposure to naturally occurring or human toxic substances.

These toxins can alter the activity of the nervous system to neutralize or kill the nerves. Nerves are necessary for transmitting and processing information in the brain, along with other areas of the nervous system.

-Studies show that vitamins C and E and garlic extract can help eliminate a variety of toxins, particularly lead, from the body. Garlic decreases the uptake of toxins in bones and soft tissues. Vitamins C and E reduce oxidative damage due to their antioxidant properties, allowing the body to recover from injuries caused by lead and toxins.

-Installing water filters and air cleaners in the house can help reduce exposure to toxins.

-Physical activity and exercise are other excellent detox methods as toxins are constantly released from sweat.
